Do you make your kids have a bed time in the summmer? My kids want to stay up past 8:30 but i enjoy my quiet time ( they are 8, 11 and 14.) and want them to keep the same bed time so they dont have to readjust when school starts…but my husband thinks I am being too strict and they should have a little more freedom considerin its the summer and they should be able to have fun…who is right?

You could let them have a flexible bedtime on the weekends, but no bedtime will lead to tired crabby kids all day. They need their sleep.
We told the kids 2am (8 and 14) as long as they are quiet. If they aren’t quiet, they can go to bed at 9 lol. They’re always quiet tho. They have to be up no later than 11am. 2 weeks before school starts I make them wake up at 9 for 1 week. Then 30 min earlier each day for the next week. There so much to argue about I don’t want bedtime during summer to be a thing. I get not wanting to reset the schedules. Last year they both became nocturnal. I’m getting up for work at 5am and they are still up. That was a bitch to fix lol. Bed at 2am and up by 11 hasn’t been so bad.
Definitely more flexible in the summer especially with the older two- that’s one of the great things about summer vacation- staying up late and getting to sleep in… we always go back to routine two weeks before school starts- which definitely helps! But we use the later bedtime as a privilege that can be taken away or has to be earned… Either way summer deserves some leniency Enjoy it with them mama
Let them stay up later. A few weeks before school start them back on a schedule. I let my kids stay up it’s summer time, if they aren’t being obnoxious I don’t see what it hurts.
Definitely give them An exception for summer time. You’ll get plenty of “quiet time” once their grown but they only have one childhood to actually enjoy their summers
Kids should still have a bedtime even in the summer. I personally pushed my sons bedtime back a bit and also am more flexible with it as well. Some days are later than others but I like to keep a decent schedule going.
Your husband is right!!!
My son will stay up till 4am most of the summer. I just start making him go back to bed at a normal time like 2 weeks before school starts.
I let my kids stay up a little bit later on holidays, they love having games night with their dad. 2 weeks before school starts we bring them back to normal bed times
Give them freedom in the summer.
You’re husband is correct…let them stay up later …have activities in the day…water
.crafts. lol…then before school starts let them know bedtime will resume normallt
Personally I think you could be more flexible. Let them pick 2 or 3 days of the week they can stay up later during summer months. That way they still get to enjoy some extra time and then you can still enjoy your quiet time during the days they dont stay up.
I let my kids stay up till 10pm during summer and wake up at 10am they love it and it works for me two weeks before they start school I’ll start putting them to bed at 8:45 pm so they can get up at 7am it works they already know the routine
Let them stay up but tell them to stay in their rooms and self entertain after 8:30. Or watch tv quietly or something. Then if they get loud and cause a ruckess send them to bed. You can have your alone time too. Also they usually sleep in if they stay up late and you have the morning, or tell them they can’t wake you up before a certain time.
Let them be kids and live a little. And 830 for a 14yr old my kid would look me dead in the eyes and tell me no. My kids go to bed at 10 on school nights and 11-1130 on the weekends and during the summer.
Let them enjoy their summer
I’m with the husband. 8:30 is crazy early even when it’s not summer. We aren’t even home from my son’s sports practices by then and it’s still not even dark out…
I don’t think it’s a right or wrong. Our kids summer bed time is based off of them and their behavior. If they are respectful of us sleeping, not overly crabby, still doing what is expected of them they can stay up really as late as they want pretty much but if they are being super loud or start to get more attitude with us or don’t follow through on the things they are supposed to they get a couple nights of early bed time to reset
I let mine stay up late and sleep in during the summer.
I can’t believe a 14 year old would go to bed at 8:30 that’s just crazy even during school
I let my kids have fun and enjoy the summer. I do however start a week before school starts again with routine so that they have enough time to get use to routine again. But I found that with them having no routine they still fall asleep at normal routine hours
I let them stay up and sleep in during the summer why not
My kids dont have a bed time during summer, but they do stick to their own rooms after a certain time of night so I still get me time.
We have teens, 14 and 15. Bedtime is 10 quiet time no devices and sleep by 11 but usually it’s before, during school. But they don’t have to be at the school until nearly 9am. Summer we stretch it to midnight or a little later for special things or to reward for something. If they become cranky or not responsibly doing their chores well take back a few hours, school year and summer. It’s all what works best for your kids and their age.
I have a 8 and 11 years old kids. They get to stay up much later then usual in summer. But they also slept in much more. I do appreciate those lazy mornings!
Atleast give them an extra hour
I’d let all of them stay up with no bedtimes, especially the 14 year old.
It’s still daylight out at 8:30
8:30 is a bit early for summer for these ages IMO
So your making them go to bed because its easier for YOU! I think you answered your own question.
I give them each an extra hour because of summer activities, sunset etc. But it’s not open ended because I still have to work etc. And so do the older teens.
8:30, really Karen? Lol
My child is 6 and has a bedtime of 8pm but my husband and I have been letting him stay up till 8:30 sometimes 9 depending on what the day looked like. However, my husband was being really strict the first month or so of summer and was making him go to bed at usual time but I think he should be able to stay up a little bit so I convinced my husband to let up a bit.
I would the 14 yr old stay up however late. The others maybe at least an hour later…
Nope i let my son do whatever time he wants but during school he’s in bed by 10
My girls are 6yo and 3yo. Yes when my eldest was on summer vacation (no longer now) she got to stay up 9 or 9:30
It is summer enjoy the lighter evenings with your children and let them stay up later. After all you only have 18 summers with them before they turn into adults.
Definitely need to give your kids room to actually enjoy their summer. A 14 year old going to bed at 830?? That doesn’t seem fair in general. You’ll have plenty of quiet time when they are grown and gone.
8:30?! What??? My 1,3, 6 and 7 year olds are all awake right now, at 2:50 am . During school it’s different but at the moment idc. I’m a work at home mom who makes their own schedule and can sleep anytime I’m not working.
Our kids have never really had a bedtime. Funny thing, it’s like their bodies set it for them after only about a week. They’re 13 & 9 now & they’ve had the same basic sleep patterns since they were toddlers. Our 13 yr old stays up super late on occasion now. Both good students in school, never been in trouble, pretty polite. Of course, every kid is different tho.
Yes give them some slack, it’s summer. But kick start that bedtime routine up two weeks out from a school starting up.
Your husband is absolutely right.
Let them enjoy the summer , put them back on their bedtime routine a week prior of the beginning of the school
Your husband is definitely right. 8:30 for a 14 year old is ridiculous.
Our 3 girls go to bed at 9pm on school nights and 10pm during the summer. Sometimes they get to stay up even later if they are having a 'slumber party’with each other.
I personally think they’re old enough to stay up longer. But if you want to compromise maybe talk to your husband about making 830 or 9 quiet time. The kids can play in their room, watch a movie, play video games etc. Its their hour or so of wind down time before bedtime. They can still play and enjoy themselves but you get some chill time too
Jesus people genuine asks these type of questions?! well first of all…do you boo boo but don’t be all shocked and surprised when your 11 and 14 year old run tf away at 9 pm…you’ll have way more quiet time than you’ve ever thought you wanted
830 is very early specially for a 14 year old
I’m definitely curious about your other rules cause this one is crazy. This proves that just because ur the adult doesn’t mean you have all the sense. Let them be children. Teach them to relax after a certain hour so you can have peace as well but don’t put them to bed. That’s way too early either way.
Yup… …if only for your peace and sanity but 8:30 is a bit early……10pm for 8yo & 11yo and 11pm or longer for the 14yo but as long as they are quiet he is right
I would push it back by half an hour or an hour. It’s not too far off their normal routine, but will still make summer a little extra special.
My 7yr old stayed up till midnight all summer school starts Friday so this week he is working on getting back to his school sleep schedule which we had no problems with tonight
I agree with your husband let them kids enjoy their summer and stay up longer. 8:30 is way to early to make them go to bed.
No bed time during summer. Let em live
My children tuck me in during the summer Leandra Baker right!? Lol
My son stays up late in the summer and weekends just let kids be kids
Hubby. No later than 9.30 though
Maybe let them stay up later a few nights a week
8:30? Are you serious? Your husband is definitely right.
8:30 for a 14 year old is extremely early. It’s summer let them enjoy it. It doesn’t even get dark till 10.
Definitely need more slack in the summer. In our house we stay up late and play video games, or watch movies. (Im a sahm so we have that time and I know some don’t but it works for us.) I feel like with school I miss out on so much time with them (at least more stress free time) so I use summer time to make up for it. But I think 8:30 is to early for bed period with older school age kids. They are literally away from home 7 ,8,9 hrs a day and then come home and cram in homework, baths, dinner, sports and their ME time before being made to go to bed. I feel like they need some quiet time to calm their minds like us adults so we start getting ready for bed and calming down around 8:30-9, watch a little TV and my 8 year old is usually passed out by 9:30-10 and my 15yr old around 11-11:30. The school days are hard and stressful let them enjoy their time off.
Let them stay up some 8:30 to early for 14 year old. Summer is their break too!!
My kids are like Anna from Frozen ‘the skies awake… I’m awake!’
Does not matter what time they go to bed always up around the same time 630-7am. We do bedtime no later than 9pm and my kids are 12, 10, 7 and 3 yrs.
12 year old does stay up later bc she reads but everyone is tucked into bed by that time.
My kids get to stay up during the week but be jn their rooms when dad goes to bed for work (9 & 11, 17 year old can do what he wants as he is almost an adult anyway) weekends they just go to bed when they want. I work 3rds so it doesn’t bother me because they tend to sleep later and makes it easier for me to sleep. 2 weeks before school starts we go back to school bedtimes. 830 for the 9 year old, 930 for the 11 year old. They get 30 minutes of TV time after they go to bed so asleep by 9 and 10. I go with husband on this. Let them enjoy their free time.
During summer I let mine stay up late as long as she helps around the house the next day. I’ll let her enjoy her summer. But two weeks before school starts I make her adjust to an early schedule again
14 year old in bed at 830 in the summer? You sure that quiet isn’t bc they snuck out lol damn that’s rough !
I have 3 kids. Ages 3,9,9. My son is in bed no later than 9 during the summer/weekends. My other two are allowed to stay up til they basically crash. The rule for them is they must be in their rooms by 1030 and be quiet and respectful of others in the house sleeping and that they have to get up in the morning without a fight. During school days they are to be in bed by 930.
My 2, 6, 8, 9, & 9yr old didn’t go to bed until 12 last night. and I have a newborn so I’ve been up since 3:45am. No sleep or alone time for this momma.
We don’t have set bed time in the summer I let them enjoy it only thing I do say tho is no video games after a certain time I enjoy the freedom as much as them as there is no rushing around to do dinner and bath at certain times etc x
My daughter too young she only 21m so struggling wit bedtime routine but wen older and in school summer term and weekends later just would do for like 3/5 nights before bk to normal routine in summer sine it like 6 weeks
Agree wit ur hubby
They old anuff to do things themselves at a certain degree so maybe say this hour can u just leave me alone go see ur dad please x
My 6 yr old goes to bed at 830 pm.every nite. Kids need 8-10 hrs of sleep to properly function. My child is a whiny brat if he doesn’t sleep enough.
I’m definitely team husband on this one. 8:30 is way too early for a 14 year old to go to bed. My 14 year old high school freshman isn’t even done with her school related activities at 8:30, let alone ready for bed. It’s summer and the kids should have a little more freedom. 10 pm for the littles is fine and maybe 11ish for the teen.
Leave hubby alone with them for a night or three and then ask when you get back if they should have bedtime or not
My kids are 11,8,5,3 and we have them go to thier rooms at 8:30 year round unless we have practice for sports and Saturdays other then that they can play up there or do what ever until they fall asleep but we stick to the same routine here
Summer or not this mama still has work, school of her own, and sleep that needs to be had. My 12, 17, 18, and two 19 yr olds have free reign as long as I don’t hear ya anyhow haha. My 6, 7, 8 year olds go to bed by 8:30 unless it’s my night off of work and then we do a game night/movie night/ etc.
With the hubby on this SORRY … later bed time …my two are 6 and 10 … on school night 6yrs old is in bed by 7.30 with film ( awake til about 9) and 10 yes old has a sleep disorder , ADHD odds so he’s in his room from 9.00 on school nites… in summer 10. As he donest really sleep much…x
I agree with your husband! Let the kids be kids. It’s not like they’re out running the streets.
For my 2 older I let them stay up til midnight but if they start being extremely loud keeping everyone else up I make them go to bed. My daughter, who is younger keeps the same bed time all summer. However I do start to reinitiate the regular bedtime about 3 weeks before school starts back up
To each their own. None of my kids have a bed time really at all. My 15 year old goes to bed when ever she wants all year long. It’s usually between 9 and 10 depending on what is going on. My younger to don’t have a bed time all year long either, they just go to bed when I do. Which is anywhere from 10pm to midnight. They are 5 and 9.
My kids 10,8,7 go to bed at 8-8.30pm they then get to watch their devices or read. I have the Internet set that it turns off on their devices at 11pm during the holidays. Most nights they are asleep before then and it turns off at 10pm during school term.
14 & 16 here. Shoot, most nights, the 14yo puts me to bed! I have an alarm that goes off when it’s time for the 16yo to get off work so I know she gets home ok. Once she’s home, I’m out! I get up for work @ 3:15am.
Now, it’s getting close to school time, the 14yo is getting back in his 10pm bedtime schedule. Everything off by 9:30.
My kiddos get into bed at 9, usually asleep by 930. They are 8 ans 10. School time it’s bed ar 830
8 year old has to go to bed around 830/9 there are some nights I let her stay up a little later but most of the time that’s how it is. I need sleep too I’m in my last trimester of pregnancy and honestly I’m ready for bed around that time myself same with my husband who is military. We can’t have her running around unsupervised
After 8:30 all issues with them are his, and he has to get them ready for school the first couple weeks until they get back on the school schedule. That seems like a faire compromise.
Unless there’s something we have to do the next day, we let our 2x14 and 16 year olds have free reign on bedtime in the summer.
They don’t bother us when we need to sleep. I get up at 545 for work and half the time they are just waking up when I get home from work. As much as it irritates us with them sleeping all they, they aren’t running the streets, sneaking out, or drinking, they play video games. We adjust a week or so before school to get them on a sleep schedule, but it’s summer, and they are only kids for such a short time. Team dad.
My 10 and 12 year old do not have a bed time during summer. They stay up until like 12am-3am. They just have to stay in their room and be quiet after 11pm
Maybe half a hour longer each for the younger two and a hour for the 14 year old …
Mine are 13 14 and 15…as long as they are in bed by midnight during summer
830…it isn’t even dark outside yet! It’s summer time. Ease up bro.
I still work whether it’s school holidays or not. So kids go to sleep at their usual time. They do however stay up a bit later friday/saturday nights.
No free time you have 3 kids. Go outside chase lighting bugs. Play in the dark with your kids. Nerf gun wars in the dark are fun too
Most days my boys are falling asleep before 7… they are 5 and 6… no matter how late I keep them up they are always up by 530-6. Annoying haha
Myv11 and 13 yr old don’t have a bedtime for summer my 4 yr old I try to keep her on somewhat of a schedule
He is. 14 with an 830 bedtime? It’s summer. They can stay up to 10 at least.
Push it back an hour but still keep a routine
Kids out of routine soon become very hard work and over tired and ratty
X
Your husband is right!! My 12 year old has to be in bed by midnight and my 7 and 4 year old are in bed by 10-10:30
During school my younger kids are in bed by 8, my older by 10 but usually earlier.
In summer my younger 7 and 13 are in bed by 9 only because they wake up by 630/7 regardless of bedtime. My older 15 & 17 by 11 ish . But I also don’t let any of them sleep til noon they need to be awake by 9 ish and moving forward with their day.
Those poor kids. First of, your reasons for early bedtime are purely selfish. If you’re this strict about bedtime, I can only imagine how tight the apron strings are on other issues. Loosen up or be prepared for those kids to rebel at the soonest chance.
In the summer and on weekends I let mine stay up a little later. My 7yo is usually in bed by 830 normally 730. My 11yo is usually between 9-10pm usually 845. Sp basically they get an extra hour…unless they’ve been acting up then I tell them to go to bed when I’m ready for them to.
